Rationale: to learn information, student needs to be present. If not present, you could fall behind in learning, or if you miss too much, you could get yourself put in ISS, fail the class/grade or get your parents in trouble.
Procedure:
Beginning of term:
- Have sitting arrangements prepared and in hand
(as you wait at door), posted outside of door, and have names taped to desk.
- As students come in, check off their name on
your list and watch where they sit and if they are having trouble finding their
seat, show them or ask another student to help.
- After bell rings, explain that you are about to
call off their name and once you here your name, raise your hand and answer
with “here”. Call the names off, check that student is in the right seat, then
double check your list (ask if you missed anyone.)
Rest of term:
- Once you are comfortable about knowing your
students, let them choose their own seats. Record new seating arrangement. Watch
students as they come in and check your list.
- After bell rings, call names off and check your
list, or if you know all your students, check around room. If anyone missing,
ask classmates if they might have seen them earlier or know where they could
be.
Check for understand: ask if they understand.
